Hospital Radios on the Air.
EMC RadiosFinally, after nearly 4 years, the Emanuel Medical Center in Swainsboro has it's VHF and HF amateur radios installed and working.
This equipment was purchased thru a GEMA grant and the antenna installed in 2008 but the job was left undone and the equipment not installed as other projects took precedence.

On March 9, 2012 N4SFU Ron Hill completed the install at the hospital and now we can say that the GEMA grant money that was spent has been put to good use.

This radio equipment will be used to communicate to other amateur operators operating radio equipment at participating hospitals and health care facilities throughout the state in the event that a disaster or extenuating circumstances should threaten our area.

Regular communications as good as they are, use high speed fiber optics for voice communications as well as computers for data transmissions. A single component failure or severe weather can interrupt vital communications.

Ham Radio does not require complicated systems to communicate and therefore is not likely to fail due to severe weather and is not dependant on fiber optics to complete a voice transmission.
When all other forms of communications fail; Contact a ham radio operator. We can pass along the information.

Emanuel Medical Center is in region G and reports to Georgia Health Sciences Health Service hospital (MCG)in Augusta.
GA ARES Emergency Coordinator for Emanuel County Ron Hill (N4SFU) is the chief operator and person in charge of the radios at Emanuel Medical Center and has assigned John Smoyer III (KJ4YEK) Assistant Emergency Coordinator for Emanuel County, Jim Hill (N4MOC) and Rose Hill(N4ORI)as assistant operators of this station in the event that the system is needed in a emergency situation.
